On today’s episode of Framework, Jamie talks with former NFL player and Hall of Famer Darrell Green. Darrell currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director at George Mason University.

Growing up, Darrell experienced anything but affluence. His parents divorced and he remembers life with Food Stamps and cheap rent. Darrell found himself in professional football without much understanding of the world or clout associated with pro sports.

While he fell into money traps here and there, Darrell’s naivete served him well. As a man of faith, Darrell stuck to his beliefs and successfully navigated a new financial world with humility and an eye towards philanthropy.

Darrell talks with Jamie about handling big paychecks at a young age and his long-term goals to give back.

“I had a different perspective in life. I had had a child out of wedlock. I really wanted to get my life right. I was more interested in who Darrell Green is and how God sees me and how I respond to that than how famous will I be. That’s probably why I played 20 seasons. Because it was always, always just a job. I never drank the juice. I never bit the apple.” ~ @darrellgreen28

Main Takeaways

  • Seeking trustworthy mentors is key to managing your money well, especially in the early days of your financial journey.
  • It doesn’t matter how much money you’re handed along the way. If you can’t manage your money and the power and expectations that come alongside it, the wealth will destroy you.
  • There’s a dilemma in the financial world because advisors are incentivized to both grow your money and retain it.
