With too many choices and confusing deadlines, it’s no wonder enrolling for Medicare is one of the most frustrating experiences many Americans will have.

But it doesn’t have to be that way, insists Dave Francis, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Healthpilot. Healthpilot aims to bring the same ease and convenience to the Medicare shopping experience that consumers now enjoy on sites like Amazon and Warby Parker. As the former COO and CFO of eHealth, a health insurance marketplace, Dave is very familiar with how health care can be made better using technology.

“We’re trying to change Medicare from being a telephonic-centric process, sales-oriented business into a service-oriented, data-driven e-commerce marketplace that this demographic is now ready for,” he says.

Healthpilot’s research shows that seniors give the Medicare shopping experience a negative15 Net Promoter Score (NPS), a metric for measuring customer experiences. Consumers rate cable providers and dentists higher.

To help them find the right plan, Healthpilot asks consumers questions about their health, prescriptions and finances. Then, algorithms sort through thousands of plans and recommend the best ones based on each consumer’s health care and financial needs.

In today’s podcast, Ana and Jamie talk to Dave about current frustrations with the Medicare shopping process, how technology can make it simpler and how seniors can live their best retirements with the right health care coverage.

Disclosure: Jamie used Healthpilot to help his mom enroll for Medicare.
