Ranked one of the world’s best pound-for-pound boxers, Terence “Bud” Crawford was born to fight. His father, grandfather and an uncle were all amateur boxers. The late, great boxing coach Midge Minor saw 7-year-old Terence getting into fights in the neighborhood and took him under his wing and into the gym. That’s where Terence learned natural talent will only get you so far. He credits his coaches with saving his life.

“It’s very important to have a coach that cares about you,” Terence said. “I was talented, but I was still around bad people doing bad things and getting in trouble. Midge would get me from school because if he didn’t, I wasn’t going to the gym. He told me, ‘I’m telling everybody you’re going to make it and I’m going to make sure you do.’ Anytime I’m going through things or need help, my coaches are always there. They know me.”

Terence is sharing what he’s learned – and his success – with others. Born and raised in Omaha, he launched nonprofit B&B Sports Academy to teach local kids how to box and train for health and life free of charge.

“It’s a place you can call home if you don’t have one because everyone is going to treat you like family,” he said. He is also building apartment complexes in North Omaha to help provide affordable housing.

Terence talks to Jamie and Ana about his childhood, how to combat negativity with positive thinking, what it took to be taken seriously as a boxer from Nebraska, why it’s important to give back and his next big goal – to become welterweight undisputed champion.

Key Takeaways

  • Everyone has doubts about themselves. When you have negative thoughts, be positive and work harder.
  • Dedication and hard work make people great – it’s not just talent.
  • A lot of people want to do things for likes and social media attention. Be you.

“I’m a firm believer in each one, teach one. If I can teach you, then you can teach another fighter. Everybody can get better at the same time.” – Terence Crawford
