In today’s episode of Framework, Jamie and Ana talk to Dana Wilson, CEO and Founder of CHIP, a B2B2C financial services marketplace.

As a 15-year veteran of the financial services industry, Dana has noticed a consistent problem: there are not enough women and people of color in leadership positions. Dana, who’s quite adept at customer-focused services, has focused on encouraging diversity in workplaces, and increasing customer trust and business success.

Dana talks with Jamie and Ana about ensuring visibility and sustainability of financial professionals of color in the finance industry and our role as leaders and advocates.

“We’re literally all in this together. It all sounds kind of corny in a way—we all constantly say representation matters and all of those things, but they’re true.  You can’t really say them enough, so to build the foundations we have to sit at the same table, no matter what you look like, no matter what your background is, what your gender is, we all have to be included in the conversation and just invited to it.” ~Dana Wilson

Main Takeaways

  • Speak up about injustice and fight for what you deserve. For women and people of color, there is a shared sense of invisibility in the financial services industry.
  • Leverage tech to create and maintain a diverse and democratic workplace. Contrary to what most people think, there are a lot of people of color in the industry; creating a database with profiles can extend a firm’s reach when onboarding.
  • Be motivated rather than getting frustrated. It’s important to always be intentional and to take actionable steps when you want to advocate for diversity in the workplace.
  • It’s important to be introspective. Do we have implicit biases that lead to discrimination? Misconceptions and mistakes are normal but it’s now our responsibility to correct them.
